Semmy de Nada - a real one-off
Crime stories á la Canarias

Semmy de Nada, with his painted fingernails and a squeaky-colored hat, is a quirky guy who can talk without a dot or comma. A man bubbling over with words and creative ideas. This is exactly what prompted the artist, who has already appeared in several TV and film productions, to put down on paper the many stories that buzzed through his head.

For over 15 years he has lived with his partner in the mountains above Icod de los Vinos. After 30 years of relationship, the two are still happily married. (Note from Semmy: the editors had overlooked the fact that we are not married because that was not even possible 30 years ago, but it almost feels like it).

He also regularly commutes to Germany to take care of his mother. "I've loved living in the Canary Islands for 20 years. I've never been in the same place as long as I have been here. Between these open-minded people I feel comfortable and that's exactly why my stories must be set in the Canary Islands. I want to give something back to the islands and the people.

After all, I want readers to want to visit the settings themselves," says the witty author during a personal conversation in the bar of the Hotel "Botánico" in Puerto de la Cruz.

Semmy de Nada had already grasped the benefits of the Internet in the 1980s, and in 1999 he wrote a computer book that he used to teach more than 5,000 people how to use computers in seminars. Now, however, he is not using his talent for non-fiction, but is pursuing a special passion: He is working on the crime series "Canary Island Murders" - one crime story per island.

DineOpinion – Deadly Reviews

The first crime novel that Semmy de Nada recently published is set in Tenerife. Its protagonists Moritz and his mother Valerie run the restaurant "Seahorse" in Garachico. Although it is a popular restaurant, bad reviews hail on the Internet, bringing mother and son to the brink of despair.

Is that why Valerie is lying dead in bed one morning? Did she take her own life out of grief? Her son Moritz does not believe so, but instead comes under suspicion not only of being his mother's murderer but also of having caused the deaths of several influencers and Internet professionals who die mysteriously in various places in the course of the story.

Fortunately, his friend Jonay and his girlfriend Dácil stick by him. And then there is the trio, consisting of the lawyer Filbert Dols, the hacker Nate Lukas and the private detective Otis Wilhelm. Together with Inspector Valdés, they try to find out what is really behind the murders. They come across dubious machinations on the net.

The thriller is very entertaining, loosely written, and of current explosiveness.  All the locations really exist and interesting details about the island are conveyed along the way. The perfect vacation read, which first animates to stay "glued" on the deck chair, until the last page is devoured and the tangled story brings a resolution. And then it also animates you to visit the many beautiful places described in the novel.

The book is available in print and digitally at regular bookstores, as well as through the DineOpinion.com website. It can also be ordered through the German bookstall in La Paz. By the way, it is also available in German and Spanish.
