How To Install Threads If You Are In Europe (July 2023)

Yes the new hyped Twitter competition Threads by Meta (Facebook/Instagram) is out of the box and users in Europe can't download it yet from the official app stores due to privacy concerns (that might be justified after all!). I still was too impatient to wait and got started with my own new shiny Threads account.

How to use Threads in Europe as of now in July 2023?

I personally followed the original advice from https://www.ghacks.net/2023/07/06/how-to-install-threads-on-android-if-you-live-in-europe/ and here's the simplified step-by-step guide on how to install Threads on Android if you live in Europe.

Prepare Your Device: Ensure you have an Android device and an Instagram account. You'll also need a VPN account from providers like Mullvad, NordVPN, or others that allow you to select servers based on region.

I did use the free Proton VPN app from the Google Play store that offers you to use a free United States server.

1. Download Threads APK: Using your Android device's web browser, navigate to the APK Pure website or APK Mirror and download the latest Threads Android APK file.
2. Connect to a VPN Server: Launch your VPN service on your Android device and connect to a server located outside of the European Union, such as a server in the United States.
3. Install Threads: Open the downloaded Threads APK file on your Android device to start the installation. You may need to allow the app you're using to install files from unknown sources. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
4. Set Up Threads: After installation, go through the initial setup. This involves selecting an Instagram account or entering your Instagram account name and password. You can import some data from Instagram to Threads, but this is not mandatory.

Please note that there's always a risk associated with downloading an Android application from a third-party source. If you're in doubt, it's recommended to wait for the official release of the application in Europe. Also, you don't need the VPN connection anymore after the setup, as no further checks are run when the application is started or used.

How To Post On Threads?

The current launched version however does not allow you to use the web to post and plan your social media content:

As of now, Threads is primarily a mobile application and is available for iOS and Android devices. While individual threads can be viewed on a desktop when opened from a link, there is currently no functionality to post or engage with content via a web browser or desktop version. However, according to Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, the team is actively working on developing a web or desktop version of Threads. So, in the future, you might be able to use Threads via a web browser.

P.S.:

Not sure yet about where Thread is going to be - as I am as annoyed about Twitter (just canceled my Blue Tick subscription!) as I am annoyed about Meta blocking one of my Facebook Accounts about my crime novels because it contains the word "murder" in it and after 10 months they still block me on there.
